History

History is the spine of what we publish. We cover the full European arc — prehistory, classical antiquity, the medieval centuries, the early modern world, the Enlightenment, the modern era — across all the traditions we treat. Our standard is the standard of the better history magazines: argument grounded in sources, written for non-specialists without condescension, willing to take a position when the evidence supports one.

We treat history as live material rather than commemorative pageant. A medieval legal code, a Renaissance commercial contract, a nineteenth-century newspaper editorial — each is a window into how people actually thought and acted. Where the historical material connects to present-day questions, we make the connection plainly. Where it doesn’t, we don’t force it.

The Long Year

A diary such as might have been kept by any of ten thousand wives left to hold the farm, the children, and the fear while their husbands went to war.
